Road Safety
The motorway is statistically safer than ordinary roads, but speed amplifies the consequences of mistakes. Here are the safety principles the community most often recalls — to be completed by official guidance.
Fundamentals
- Always wear your seatbelt, in every seat;
- Keep to the right lane except when overtaking;
- Respect signage and speed limits;
- Anticipate: look far ahead and watch your mirrors.
Speed and distance
The maximum speed on motorways is generally 120 km/h (unless stated otherwise, roadworks or weather). Keep a sufficient safety gap — the "two-second" rule is a good guide — and increase it in the rain.
Fatigue and night driving
Fatigue is a major accident factor. Take a break at the first sign of drowsiness, roughly every two hours. At night, slow down if needed, keep your lights in good order and stay especially alert.
In a breakdown
- Slow down and reach the emergency lane if there is one;
- Switch on your hazard lights;
- Get occupants out and to safety behind the barriers;
- Signal your presence and alert the emergency services via official facilities.
